Kota Darul Ehsan

Being on top of the KL to PJ archway, the Kota Darul Ehsan, created butterflies in my tummy. I had to go up there to complete the lighting installation inspection. I was joined by a senior contractor. As I looked down the fear of heights grew. It was perhaps 6 storeys high. Climbing up the vertical cat-ladder really made my heart pump. Both my arm and leg muscles burned. Going down was tougher still as both the arms and legs were shaking due to the extreme fatigue. At last we reached ground. When we were down the contractor shook his head and smiled at me. It was fearsome for him to climb up such a height with his bad knees. But no way was he going to let a young mother beat him at it. Although he swore he would not repeat it again.

Mazda 323

Getting my brand new Mazda 323 was such a joy. After ensuring that everything was in order it was time to drive it out of the sales depot. Suddenly fear struck. It was the first time me driving my own car. No more driving the beaten up Datsun Sunny that belonged to the driving school.

With my heart pounding heavily, slowly and carefully I drove the car out. I had to drive it through unfamiliar routes. I took time off from work to go and collect the car. The roads were heavy with traffic going through the Kuala Lumpur city center. I was sweating even with the air-conditioning switched on full. There were cars honking at me for no apparent reason. As I drove towards the office around Masjid Negara the road forked out to 2 different levels. I almost drove up the center kerb. What an embarassment it would have been if I got stuck there in a brand new car.

Eraser

Having one or two erasers is quite normal for any school-going kid. We were so surprised to find a shoe box full of erasers. That is Bubba's fetish for you. He would win games and the reward would be the loser's eraser. It would have taken Bubba quite some time to arrive at that stage of his collection. Similarly they came in various colors, shapes, smells, textures and sizes. Then one day the whole shoe box just disappeared. Bubba never did remember what happened to them.

Young Mameh's Fetish

Tokki was the supplier of Mameh's fetish. Whenever he went to the supermarket or to the pasar malam he will look out for Mameh's favorite gadget; the torchlight. He has an amazing collection of torchlights, all in different sizes, shapes and colors. He even had the coal-miner's head lamp. If there was a blackout we would not have any problems going around the house. Sometimes he would be so engrossed playing with his collection that his bright torchlights would eventually dim. We had to wean him off his fetish because it was costing us too much in maintaining the batteries.

Cincalok

While playing in the water at the beach Dik Yan shouted "Nyamuk! Nyamuk!"

I frantically looked around for mosquitoes going after her. How curious. There were no mosquitoes around her or on the water's surface. Dik Yan started swatting her swimwear. I saw tiny critters all over her. Then I felt pricks on my skin that was inside my thick denim blouse. My blouse was covered with the same tiny critters like Dik Yan's. I started to jump up and down just to get them off me and Dik Yan.

On close scrutiny the tiny critters were krills. We were swamped by the krills. If only we had the right tools we could catch them and make cincalok.
